Newbie to tractor ownership and trying to decide between Kubota 3240HST with fel of John Deere 3320 with fel. Also buying tiller & rotary cutter(5 or 6 foot?). Have 55 acres with 13 acres woods/drainage area and 42 leased farmland. Will be cleaning out woods and drainage and converting leased farmland to deer management land (grasses, clovers, trees trails etc. Soil is heavy clay. Any and all comments would be great. Thanks.

Not sure I would go with either of these tractors and certainly not the John Deere 3320 since the transmission case and final drives are made of cast aluminum. I think you would be FAR better of with an ag tractor over a compact tractor. Niether of these tractors has the hp to run a 6 ft. rotary cutter in any kind of brush or heavy vegetated field. If you plan to do any CRP work with planting trees, you will want a tractor that can pull a sub soiler through dry ground 18 inches deep.
I would strongly recommend the M series Kubota or one of the 5000 Series Deere machines. Depending upon the transmissions and options you select, the ag tractor may actually be less expensive than a compact.
I have a John Deere 4410 which is roughly comparable to something between the Deere 3520 and 3320. It does well with a 4 or 5 ft. rotary cutter, limited rotor tilling, and hay raking, as well as other tasks with the FEL within its limits. Compared to a 40 or 50 hp ag tractor, it is nothing more than a VERY HIGHLY glorified lawn mower. I would never attempt pulling a plow or subsoiler or other similar impliment as I am pretty sure this would be a fine way to destroy an axle or crack the transmission case. Skidding logs of any size are not possible with this tractor as well due to the weight of the log.
My 4410 has been a very reliable machine and has down very well at the tasks I have used it for including recently bush hogging over 100 acres with it using a 4 ft. rotary cutter. Talk about saddle sore!
If all you intend to do is very light and limited duty use like I am, you should be fine with either of the choices you mentioned in your post. Just be well aware of the limitations of these machines and don't go past it. If you think you may be doing more heavy duty uses, I would again strongly recommend you look at an ag class tractor.
Good luck with your wildlife management, I do the same thing and it is a very rewarding thing to watch the changes and improvements to the wildlife due to conservation measures you take. ....

Better listen to Chief, I was on tractorhouse.com and those M series tractors are mor affordable than I thought. Almost enough to get me thinking.Chief, I'm sure that 4410 can pull a 6' rottary cutter cant it? I got a 7510 Kubota and just bought a 4' Howse rottary and does awsum until it gets in high alfalfa. How do you do 100 ac. with a 4' cutter? I do 22 ac. three imes a year and by the time I'm done I'm so sick of it that I'm wishing to see the snow fly! ....

I won't ad anything to Chief or Ihookem's comments, all good advice. I have a 4310 Deere, been a good reliable servant. The only thing I'll ad is a very breif rendition of my old sermon on dealers. Both brands you mention are good tractors. Don't worry too much about a few dollars difference you may save by going to a distant dealer or buying from a dealer you are not comfortable with. Both brands will eventualy break down and need routine service, that's where good LOCAL, RELIABLE, dealership will make or break your enjoyment of tractor ownership. Enjoy what you buy. Frank. ....

The members who wrote in before me have things right. You're going to need a much bigger tractor than either of the two you've listed here.
May I suggest an older International 1466? For the same amount of money, or even less, you'll be getting 10 times the tractor........and there are thousands of these around the country. Finding used parts will be no problem at all.

Thanks for all the info guys. All seems like good advice and will need to do some rethinking. I was concerned about tractor size as well so will probably spend a little more now to get it right the first time. Thanks again ....

hey chief, what do you know about Mahindra tractors? we have been looking at Kubota, thought we made up our minds, then were introduced to Mahindra. we have 400 wooded acres in the ozarks. we'll be clearing, maintaining a road, digging a basement, hauling rock to build a house.......lots of work. would love any input. ....
